JOB SUMMARY Riis Settlement seeks skilled and experienced Substitute Instructors to provide on-call instruction for our adult ESOL classes located in Long Island City, Astoria, and Jackson Heights, Queens. Available class schedules include mornings (9:00 – 12:00 pm Tuesday to Thursday), evenings (6:00 – 9:00 pm Tuesday to Thursday), and Saturdays (9:30 am – 4:00 pm) running from mid September 2024 to late June 2025. The Substitute Instructor will provide on-call class coverage on a per diem basis until the regular instructor can return to work. The Instructor will provide contextualized instruction that gives students English language skills to effectively participate in the English-speaking environment in which they live. Successful candidates will have experience creating student-centered learning environments, using a communicative approach, and incorporating technology in the classroom. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES Major Duties and Responsibilities Provide coverage to the assigned class during morning, evening, and/or Saturday schedules. Provide content-based English language instruction at the beginning, intermediate, or advanced levels. Using the lesson plans provided, deliver material through a variety of instructional methods that are adapted to students diverse learning styles. Provide authentic language tasks, interactive activities, and opportunities to practice speaking and writing for fluency. Administer student assessment tools that gauge student learning and monitor progress towards desired outcomes. Create a welcoming environment that fosters community and learning among program participants. Administrative Functions: Review lesson plan and materials provided in advance of subbing. Arrive 15 min before the class begins to get acclimated, prepare class materials, and set up the classroom. Submit signed daily attendance sheets for program records. Assist with testing during registration sessions (training will be provided if not certified to administer BEST Plus). Attend program meetings and staff development activities, as needed. Qualifications STATEMENT OF SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: Availability to provide per diem coverage during one or more class schedules: mornings (9:00 - 12:00 pm Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday), evenings (6:00 - 9:00 pm Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday), and/or Saturdays (9:30 am 4:00 pm). Bachelor’s Degree and 2 years relevant teaching experience (Master’s in TESOL and/or Education preferred) Ability to modify/adapt existing lesson plans and curricula to fit program needs, and/or create original lesson plans Thorough, detailed knowledge and understanding of English grammar with the ability to clearly explain all verbs, tenses, and parts of speech. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with team. Advanced computer literacy and proficiency in Microsoft Office. Ability to interact with diverse immigrant populations and empathize with people of different cultural backgrounds.
